Most web companies will tell you that when spending money on new websites, most clients will want to save money on professional copywriting, preferring instead to gather the content together themselves. When money is tight, it's natural to want to save where possible. But doing your own web text may not be the right place to cut back.

Web content should be clear, concise and focused on providing the reader with the information they want.
The unofficial rules are:
- Keep text short, sharp and to the point
- Keep it simple, so readers can 'scan read' down the page
- Be careful about using links in body text
- Make paragraphs 'chunky' - stick to one key point or message per paragraph
- Reduce cognitive burdens - don't overload the reader with too much choice at once
- Make menus meaningful
It doesn't have to be ruinously expensive
Obviously every web content project is different, but as a general guide, my rates average out at around £65.00 per page. If you are spending several thousand pounds on a new site, good copy could cost just a couple of hundred (depending on the situation etc.).
