Marketing blogs I read (and I only read the best stuff...)
One of the questions I get asked the most from delegates in my workshops is “what marketing blogs do you recommend I read?” Obviously everyone’s reading list will be different, but I thought I’d share with you the blogs I read and enjoy that provide a good source of information on marketing, online stuff, and general trends in the marketing industry.
So, not in any particular order, here is a list of some of the blogs that I follow and most importantly, actually read.
Battenhall is a top notch brand communications agency in London. In short, if these people don’t know about it, it never happened. Their blog is full of really useful articles about social media and trends in the industry. They also do a free monthly PDF which gives useful facts and figures across the social media landscape. As soon I have the budget, these are the people I want to handle my online brand.
I’m a big user of Grammarly. For those of you that don’t know it, it’s a great tool for keeping all your content grammatically correct. No offence to the Microsoft Word, but frankly their spelling and grammar checker is no very good. Grammarly doesn’t auto correct your written work, it challenges you to think about what you’ve written and makes suggestions for improvement. It’s really very good. Anyway, in addition to being a great app, I really like their blog. It’s all about writing tips, fun word games, explanations for complex grammar rules you probably haven’t thought about since you were at school. The blog is very readable and a great one to look at while having a sarnie at your desk.
Social Triggers is written by Derek Halpern, and internet entrepreneur who knows tons about making cash online. He doesn’t take any prisoners, and tells you exactly what he thinks. I don’t always agree with him, but that’s what makes it a good read. His style won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I really like it.
Is it a blog or is it an ezine? Who cares. This site has tons of useful information on all things marketing. It showcases examples of campaigns (great for inspiring ideas) and marketing industry news. I tend to go here when I’m researching something and I normally find some good examples or information that helps signpost me to the information sources I’m looking for.
Copyblogger is a well established blog and information site on all things relating to creating content. In fact I believe it was the Copyblogger team who first coined the phrase content marketing. They have lots of great resources on the topic of content creation and copywriting. It can sometimes seem a bit ‘samey’. But you can’t deny the quality of the information. They also have lots of great free ebooks too.
Hubspot blogs are outstanding. They have three - one dedicated to marketing, one to sales and the third is for people who work in marketing and creative agencies. Their content is excellent quality, incredibly useful, and bang up to date. They are very hot on capturing your email and other details before you get access to certain information, but in Hubspot’s case I think it’s worth it for the quality of stuff you get.
Econsultancy is what I would call ‘grown up’ information. They go into a lot of detail, and they’re a particularly good source of facts and figures, and articles about how some of the worlds biggest brands are using digital marketing.
This blog is dedicated to the notion that with an internet connection, you can run a profitable business from anywhere. Sean (who writes it) has a friendly conversational style and his articles are full of useful tips for small business owners.
The Middle Finger Project
Fasten your seatbelts, this blog is a bumpy ride. I love this blog and look forward to having it ping into my inbox every week, but it’s not for the faint hearted. Ash (who writes it) is an opinionated, sassy gal who uses expletives whenever she feels like it. She writes about running a small business, marketing, copywriting and anything else she feels like sharing that week. I love the style, I love the tone and I’ll read anything this woman wants to write.
